8.7 User not informed that the link will initiate a downloaded and the size of the download (M)
8.7.1 WCAG 1.3.1 (A), 2.4.6 (AA) - Desktop, Mobile, iPad
The Undergraduate course page includes the ‘Programme specification document’ link which downloads a PDF document. This is announced as ‘Programme specification document (PDF) visited link’ which indicates that it will take you to a PDF document but it would be helpful for the user to be clearly informed that the link is a download. It would also be helpful to inform the users about the size of the file. This information should be clearly communicated to the user visually and programmatically.
Furthermore, the link opens in a new tab window but this information is not communicated to users. WCAG guidelines strongly discourage links opening in new windows. This issue is related to Links that open in a new tab window is not communicated to the user visually or programmatically (H)
See W3C article on opening new windows and tabs from a link only when necessary
8.7.2 Recommendation
Ensure that users are informed visually and programmatically that a link initiates a download and it is important to include the full document name, size and file type in the link description.
E.g. ‘Programme specification document (PDF, 138kb, initiates download)’
If opening in a new window/ tab is required then you should add descriptive text, stating that links that will open in an external window. E.g. ‘Programme specification document’ (opens in new tab)
