12.3.1 WCAG 2.4.3 (A) - Mobile

When a screen reader user activates the menu button on a mobile device, the focus moves to the LJMU hero banner and announces the content within ‘LJMU on demand’. When the user swipes to the next focusable element it moves to the home button in the browser navigation.

In order to access the menu, users have to use the ‘explore by touch’ within their phone rather than being able to access the content in the logical sequence. This is not expected behaviour and could cause confusion and disorientation for screen reader users.

12.3.2 Recommendation

When the user activates the menu button with the screen reader activated, focus should move within the drop-down menu. Focus should remain within the menu until the user selects a link from the menu, or it is dismissed.
