6.5 Decorative images with unnecessary alt text (M)
6.5.1 WCAG 1.1.1 (A) - Desktop, Mobile, iPad
The images for the ‘Quick links’ section on the Intranet landing page have been assigned an alt text and are announced by the screen reader as ‘icon’. This does not help the user identify what the image is.
As the alt text does not convey any additional information that isn’t available elsewhere on the page, it is therefore redundant.
This is the same issue as Decorative images are announced by screen readers (M) .
6.5.2 Recommendation
As these images are purely decorative and do not convey information, apply a null alt text attribute: alt=""
.
For reference, if the image is conveying information that needs to be communicated to screen reader users, ensure that the alt text is concise and meaningful.
