11.1.1 WCAG 1.3.1 (A), 2.4.4 (A) - Desktop, Mobile, iPad

The staff profile page includes a number of links for each article, such as ‘Multiple DOI,’ ‘Author url’, ‘Publisher url’ and ‘Public url’. These links are not associated to the relevant article and therefore screen reader users will have no context as to where the link will take them.

Screen reader users who navigate between interactive elements only hear the text of each element. Therefore, the text should be meaningful and identify the purpose without visual cues.

Furthermore, the links open in a new tab window without informing the user visually or programmatically. See Links that open in a new tab window is not communicated to the user visually or programmatically (H) .

11.1.2 Recommendation

Change the text for each date element to more meaningful text. E.g. ‘Author url for article- We are still obsessed by this idea of abstinence’

This can be achieved using the aria-describedby attribute as it establishes a relationship between each date and the text that describes it. For more information on aria-describedby

If opening in a new window/ tab is required, then you should add a visual indicator such as descriptive text, stating that elements that will open in an external window. Also, provide additional information for screen reader users to notify them they will be taken to a new tab by using the target=blank attribute.
